The Stat Govt. decided to prepare
an action plan which aims to cover all the arsenic affected
villages of West Bengal with a long term solution of potable
drinking water supply. Towards this direction, all the public
hand pump tubewells (1,32,000 nos.) in the 79 arsenic affected
blocks were tested in the laboratories by the active participation
of the local Panchayet . Safe hand pump tubewells were painted
blue involving and the community was involved to generate awareness
among the people. Tubewells were located by GPS instruments
and the test results were plotted on GIS based maps. Based on
these GIS maps, hydro geological studies conducted by various
other Departments of the State Govt., and efficacy of the various
mitigation measures already implemented by the Govt., a master
plan was prepared to cover all the 3229 villages with a long
term solution.
